Preparing Students for the Future at Bethany

At Bethany, we believe education should prepare children not only for success at school, but for life beyond it.

While strong foundations in literacy and numeracy remain essential, we also know that the world our young people are entering is changing rapidly. The ability to adapt, collaborate, think critically and navigate complexity is becoming just as important as the ability to recall information or perform well on a test.

The thing is, preparing students for the future is not as simple as adding a few new programs or introducing more technology into classrooms. It requires us to think carefully about what learning should actually feel like for children and what kinds of people we hope they become.

At Bethany, future-ready learning is woven throughout everyday teaching and learning experiences. Alongside explicit teaching in core learning areas, we intentionally create opportunities for students to develop the skills, mindsets and dispositions that help people flourish in a changing world.

This includes helping students grow in areas such as:

  • critical and creative thinking
  • collaboration and communication
  • resilience and problem solving
  • emotional literacy and self-awareness
  • independence and adaptability

One of the ways we support this is through our Self Sense program. Through Self Sense, students explicitly learn skills connected to emotional literacy, self-regulation, resilience and relationships. They learn to recognise emotions, understand the Zones of Regulation, navigate social situations and develop strategies to manage challenges with increasing confidence and independence.

We know that children learn best when they feel safe, connected and understood. Emotional wellbeing is not separate from learning. In many ways, it sits at the centre of it.

Our Life Lab program also provides opportunities for students to explore areas they are genuinely curious about while developing future-ready skills through creativity, collaboration, inquiry and innovation. These experiences allow students to discover strengths, passions and new ways of thinking that may not always emerge through more traditional approaches to learning.

Project Based Learning is another important part of learning at Bethany. Research consistently highlights the benefits of authentic, inquiry-driven learning experiences in helping students develop communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking skills. Through Project Based Learning, students are encouraged to ask questions, solve problems, work with others and apply their learning in purposeful and meaningful contexts.

Importantly though, this does not mean we move away from strong foundations in learning. In fact, the opposite is true. Deep thinking and creativity are strengthened when students develop confidence and capability in essential literacy and numeracy skills.

In Mathematics, approaches such as Mindset Maths and Number Talks encourage students to think flexibly, reason deeply and approach problem solving with confidence. Research by Stanford Professor Jo Boaler highlights that students achieve more highly in mathematics when they are encouraged to explore multiple strategies, think deeply and view mistakes as a valuable part of learning. Rather than focusing solely on speed or memorisation, students are supported to develop persistence, understanding and confidence.

Technology also plays an important role in learning at Bethany, not as a substitute for good teaching, but as a tool to enhance creativity, communication, engagement and connection. Students are supported to use technology intentionally, responsibly and purposefully as part of their everyday learning experiences.

Ultimately, preparing students for the future is not about choosing between wellbeing, explicit teaching or innovation. It is about bringing these elements together in meaningful ways so that children develop the knowledge, confidence, character and adaptability needed to navigate an increasingly complex world.

Most importantly, we want our students to leave Bethany believing that they are capable learners, thoughtful people and valued contributors who can make a positive difference within the world around them.
