Opportunities to Shine

We believe every child has God-given gifts—unique strengths, interests, and a purpose waiting to unfold. Our role as educators is to help young people discover who they are, what they love, and how they can use their gifts to serve others and live a life of meaning and joy.

We know that when students have the opportunity to explore their interests and feel proud of what they can do, they develop a strong sense of self and wellbeing. A deep joy comes from realising, “This is something I’m good at,” and even more so when they recognise how their skills and passions can make a positive impact in the world.

Our goal is that every student who graduates from Bethany walks away knowing what they’re good at, where their passions lie, and how they want to continue growing. This discovery doesn’t happen by accident—it’s cultivated through rich, varied experiences across their years with us.

Instrumental Music and Choir

We also offer instrumental music lessons during the school day across a range of instruments and voice, along with opportunities to join our school band and choir. These experiences encourage discipline, creativity, and connection.

Sport

We believe that sport is about more than just physical activity—it’s about teamwork, confidence, persistence, and finding joy in movement. Our sports program offers a wide range of opportunities for all students to develop their skills, discover their passions, and pursue excellence, no matter their level of experience.

A Program for Everyone

Our Primary Physical Education Program encourages participation and promotes sporting excellence. It is designed to expose students to various sports while building fitness, resilience, and a strong team spirit.

Interschool Sport – Years 5 and 6

Students in Years 5 and 6 can participate in the Ipswich Premier Interschool Sports Program, representing Bethany in netball and soccer (Term 3). These weekly fixtures allow students to develop their skills in a competitive setting while fostering sportsmanship and pride in their school.

We also participate in an annual Lutheran Gala Day, where students in Years 5 and 6 compete against other Lutheran schools in soccer and netball—a highlight of the sporting year and a wonderful community event.

Interhouse Sport – Years 4 to 6

Every Wednesday afternoon, students in Years 4 to 6 participate in interhouse sports, where they rotate through a variety of sports and activities, including:

  • Golf

  • Martial Arts

  • Team Sports (such as touch football, basketball, or soccer)

These sessions allow students to try new sports, develop new skills, and compete in a fun, supportive environment with their house teams.

Whole School Events

We host three major sporting events throughout the year, and families are warmly invited to attend and cheer on our students:

  • Sports Carnival

  • Cross Country

  • Swimming Carnival

These are joyful celebrations of effort, perseverance, and team spirit where every student is encouraged to participate and have a go.

Beyond School Competitions

Students who demonstrate outstanding ability in sport can go on to participate in District Trials and, if successful, progress to Metropolitan West competitions. These opportunities allow talented athletes to compete at a higher level and further develop their skills and experience.

Swimming Lessons

We offer swimming lessons for all year levels in concentrated blocks in Term 1 and 4.

Biennial Musical

A much-loved highlight of school life is our biennial musical, performed at the Ipswich Civic Centre. This large-scale event brings together students of all ages to shine on stage or behind the scenes and experience the thrill of performance in a professional venue.

Opportunity Within Learning

At Bethany, opportunities to shine are not limited to after school—they are embedded into everyday learning.

Self Sense, our identity and wellbeing program, supports students to grow in emotional intelligence, confidence, and self-understanding.

Life Lab invites students to choose from a wide range of creative, hands-on workshops like cooking, gardening, robotics, drawing, and coding.

Project-Based Learning (PBL) encourages inquiry, collaboration, and innovative problem-solving—helping students use their thinking and creativity to make a difference.

Christian Studies provides meaningful service learning experiences that develop empathy, compassion, and a heart for others.

Leadership and Connection

We believe every child has the potential to lead—whether through service, action, kindness, or creativity. Our Leadership Program for Years 5 and 6 provides opportunities to grow in confidence and responsibility through roles such as school captains, house captains, and worship leaders.

Our Student Council, with representatives from every year level, empowers students to have a voice in school life and promotes active citizenship.

Our Buddy Program pairs Prep and Year 6 students in a meaningful relationship that fosters connection, care, and belonging. These partnerships often become treasured memories for both younger and older students.

At Bethany, opportunities to shine are really opportunities to discover purpose. They help students recognise their strengths, develop their passions, and grow into confident, capable young people who are ready to step into life with faith, joy, and direction.

This is the kind of education that stays with them long after they leave our school gates—and the legacy we are proud to offer every Bethany student.
