Family Engagement

We believe one of the most powerful ways you can support your child’s success is by being actively engaged in their learning. When families and schools work together in partnership, students thrive.

Research consistently shows that when families and schools work together, children develop stronger literacy and numeracy skills, greater confidence, and a deeper sense of belonging at school.

Parents are a child’s first and most important teacher. At Bethany, our role is to partner with families so that every child grows in learning, character, and confidence.

Parent involvement might look like attending events or volunteering at school. Parent engagement goes further. It means showing interest in your child’s learning, asking thoughtful questions, and being curious alongside them. These everyday moments of connection help children feel supported, valued, and confident in their learning.

Studies show that children whose parents are engaged in their learning:

• develop stronger literacy and numeracy skills
• show greater motivation and improved behaviour
• build stronger social and emotional wellbeing

What are Simple Ways to Support your Child’s Learning at Home?

Engagement can take many forms, and the most meaningful often happen in simple, everyday ways.

  • Ask questions about what your child is learning. Instead of “What did you do today?”, try “What was the most interesting thing you learned today?” or “What challenged you today?”
  • We provide Engagement Questions for our families to ask their children about their learning
  • Encourage curiosity. Explore ideas together, research topics that interest your child, or connect school learning to real life.
  • Celebrate effort. Recognising progress — not just outcomes — helps children build confidence and develop a love for learning.

How Families Engage with Learning at Bethany

Families are an important part of the learning journey. At Bethany, we offer several ways for parents to see, celebrate, and discuss their child’s learning.

Exhibition Evening
Held at the end of each semester, Exhibition Evening allows families to explore their child’s learning first-hand. Students share their projects and reflections, giving families a meaningful window into their progress, passions, and growth.

Self Sense Program
Our Self Sense program helps students reflect on their identity, values, and learning strengths. Talking with your child about their Self Sense learning can help you understand how they learn best and support them in growing with confidence.

Learning Snapshots
Learning Snapshots provide fortnightly insights into what your child is exploring in class, helping families stay connected to learning and spark meaningful conversations at home.

Seesaw
Seesaw gives families real-time access to their child’s work and learning progress. You can view tasks, celebrate achievements, and leave encouragement that helps deepen your child’s thinking and reflection.

Facebook Updates
Our school Facebook page shares glimpses of classroom learning, events, and celebrations, helping families stay connected to the life of the school and continue conversations at home.

How We Support Parents in Practical Ways

Supporting your child’s learning can sometimes feel overwhelming. At Bethany, we aim to equip families with practical knowledge, strategies, and opportunities to better understand how their child learns and how they can support them at home.

This includes:

  • Parent guidebooks that explain reading, writing, and mathematics strategies used at school and how to support children at home. You can find these under the resources tab on our website.
  • Learning conferences that create space for meaningful conversations between families and teachers
  • Parent events and information sessions that help families understand the learning journey at Bethany
  • Life Together Family Workshops and Webinars focusing on wellbeing, parenting, and supporting children to thrive

Our goal is to ensure that parents feel informed, confident, and supported as partners in their child’s learning.

Family Voice and Consultation

At Bethany, we value the insights and perspectives of our families. Parent voice helps us understand the experiences of our community and informs how we continue to strengthen learning, wellbeing, and school life.

Throughout the year, families are invited to share their ideas, feedback, and reflections through a range of opportunities. These include:

  • Parent surveys that gather feedback about learning, wellbeing, and school life
  • Consultation sessions connected to school initiatives and future planning
  • Learning conferences and conversations with teachers
  • Opportunities to share ideas during parent events and community gatherings

Recent examples of family consultation in 2025 included:

  • Feedback that informed elements of the school master plan
  • Consultation about the future introduction of triple-stream classes
  • Community input into the development of Friends of Bethany
  • Feedback on student reporting approaches
  • Parent consultation regarding homework expectations
  • Community input into the school logo refresh
  • Parent feedback on the Year 6 camp experience

Planned consultation focus areas for 2026 include:

  • Cultural safety within the school community
  • Supporting student wellbeing
  • Supporting learning at home and school
  • Strengthening connection and belonging within the Bethany community
  • Parking and drop-off arrangements
  • The future of Values Awards

Listening to families helps us reflect, refine, and strengthen our practice as a school community. While the school leadership team is responsible for final decisions, parent insights are an important part of ensuring those decisions are informed by the experiences of the families we serve.

At Bethany, we see families as essential partners in the learning journey. Your involvement — whether through a thoughtful question, a shared book, or celebrating effort — sends a powerful message to your child: learning matters, and they are not doing it alone.

Together, we can help every child grow with purpose, joy, confidence, and a deep sense that they are known and valued.

If you ever have questions about your child’s learning or wellbeing, we encourage you to speak with your child’s teacher. Open, respectful communication between home and school helps children feel safe, supported, and confident to learn.

As a school community, we value strong partnerships with families and welcome the opportunity to work together in supporting every child.
