Personalised Learning at Bethany
At Bethany, we believe that every child deserves to feel known, valued and capable of success.
The thing is, no two children learn in the same way. Every child brings different strengths, interests, experiences and challenges into the classroom. Some children thrive when given opportunities to collaborate and create. Others need time, structure and reassurance before they feel confident enough to take risks in their learning. Some require additional support, while others need greater challenge and extension.
Because of this, personalised learning sits at the heart of our approach at Bethany.
For us, personalised learning is not simply about differentiating tasks or creating individual goals. It is about taking the time to genuinely understand each child academically, socially and emotionally so we can provide the support, challenge and opportunities they need to flourish.
Across the school, students work towards individual goals in reading, writing and mathematics. These goals help students understand where they are in their learning journey, what they are currently working towards and what their next steps might be. Teachers regularly conference with students, provide personalised feedback and create opportunities for students to reflect on their own progress and growth over time.
Importantly, this learning journey is shared with families. We know that when schools and families work together in partnership, children feel more supported, connected and confident within their learning.
Over the past year, our intervention programs in reading and writing have seen significant student growth. Through explicit teaching, targeted support and carefully structured learning experiences, students have been able to strengthen foundational skills, build confidence and experience success in ways that are both meaningful and encouraging.
Some students are supported through Individual Support Plans (ISPs), Individual Curriculum Plans (ICPs), behaviour support plans or wellbeing plans to ensure support is responsive to their individual needs. At Bethany, we recognise that learning support should never be approached through a one-size-fits-all lens.
Our teachers work closely with families, learning support staff and wellbeing teams to ensure each child receives the encouragement, adjustments and care they need to thrive.
Personalised learning also means recognising that children often flourish when they are given opportunities to explore their interests, passions and strengths. Through Project Based Learning, students engage deeply with meaningful questions and authentic learning experiences that encourage curiosity, creativity and collaboration.
Our Life Labs provide further opportunities for students to pursue areas they are genuinely interested in while developing confidence, independence and future-ready skills.
At the same time, we know that many children discover confidence and belonging outside traditional academic contexts. Opportunities across sport, creativity, leadership, play and community experiences all help children discover what they love, where their strengths lie and how they can contribute positively to the world around them.
Importantly, personalised learning extends well beyond the classroom itself.
Children learn best when they feel safe, settled and connected. Structured supports such as the Green Room during playtimes, intentional transition support in the mornings, regular check-ins with our Pastoral Care Assistant and a variety of outdoor play spaces all help students feel supported throughout the school day.
In many ways, wellbeing and learning cannot really be separated. When children feel anxious, disconnected or overwhelmed, learning becomes far more difficult. But when children feel known, supported and valued, confidence and growth often follow.
At Bethany, personalised learning is not simply about academic achievement. It is about creating an environment where every child experiences belonging, encouragement and the opportunity to grow in the way they need most.
Most importantly, we want every child to leave Bethany believing that they are valued, they are capable, and they can continue to grow.
