Learning - Growing a Positive Mindset in Maths
Learning - Growing a Positive Mindset in Maths
At Bethany, we believe that every child can be a successful Maths learner.
We are moving beyond the old idea that some people are just "good at maths" and others are not.
Research shows that success in Maths is about mindset, not talent.
When children believe they can grow their skills through effort and practice, they achieve much more — and even enjoy Maths!
We are excited to share that after launching our new approach in 2024, we saw a 20% improvement in Maths achievement in just the first year!
This term, we are continuing to help students build a growth mindset in Maths.
In our classrooms, you will see:
- Encouragement of effort, persistence, and problem-solving
- Celebrating mistakes as essential steps in learning
- Building confidence to try new strategies, even if the answer isn't right straight away
- Students talking about their thinking, not just finding the answer
- Multiple ways of solving a problem being shared and valued
Our approach includes:
- Open-ended tasks where there's more than one way to solve the problem
- Visual models and hands-on activities to help all learners 'see' maths
- Challenging tasks that stretch thinking and deepen understanding
- Encouraging students to take risks and learn from feedback
Why this matters:
- Students develop resilience and confidence in tackling challenges
- They build stronger number sense and a more profound understanding
- They are better prepared for the demands of real-world problem-solving
At Bethany, we are growing Mathematicians who are confident, curious, and ready to keep learning.
We are excited to build strong minds and positive mindsets in every classroom!
