A New Approach to Writing at Bethany

This year, we are introducing an improved approach to writing at Bethany—one that is designed to build confident, capable and intentional writers in every classroom.

We know that writing can be one of the most challenging areas of learning for children. Too often, students are expected to “just write” without being shown how.

Our new approach changes that.

What’s Improving?

At Bethany, writing is no longer a single task—it is a clear, structured process that is taught step by step.

Instead of asking students to do everything at once, we guide students through a consistent cycle:

• Talk it – Students develop and rehearse their ideas through conversation
• Spot it – Students study how real authors write and identify what works
• Try it – Students apply one clear writing focus as they draft
• Shape it – Students improve their writing with purpose
• Reflect on it – Students recognise growth and set goals

This approach ensures that writing is taught, practised and improved over time—not rushed.

Personalised Writing: Your Child’s Next Step

A key part of our new approach is that every child is working towards their own writing goal.

These goals are the way we personalise writing for your child. Each student works on a goal that is relevant to their next step in development as a writer—whether that is building stronger sentences, organising ideas, or adding detail and clarity.

Teachers work closely with students through regular writing conferences, where they:

• check in on progress
• give targeted feedback
• support the next step in learning

As your child grows, their goal will change over time, ensuring they are always working on what matters most for their development.

You will be able to follow your child’s progress, as their writing goals will be shared with you initially in the Semester 1 Report Cards and then when they change through Seesaw in Semester 2.

This means your child is not just completing writing tasks—they are continuously improving, with clear direction and support.

Why This Matters for Your Child

Writing is complex. Students must manage ideas, structure, vocabulary and accuracy all at once.

Our new approach reduces this overwhelm by:

• focusing on one aspect of writing at a time

You may see some important differences in how your child approaches writing:

These are all signs of deeper learning.

Learning from Real Authors

Students learn to write by studying how authors write.

They explore carefully selected texts and notice:

• how a piece begins
• how ideas are developed
• how language is used for effect

They then apply these same techniques in their own writing.

This helps children understand that writing is a skill they can learn and grow—not something they either have or don’t have.

Partnering with Families: Supporting Writing at Home

At Bethany, we believe that learning is strongest when school and home work together.

Parent engagement plays an important role in student growth, and we know that when families are involved in learning, children make stronger progress.

To support this partnership, we are launching our Write Together Guidebook—a practical resource designed to help families support their child’s writing at home.

The guide will:

• explain how writing is taught at Bethany
• provide simple strategies to support your child’s writing goal
• give practical ways to build confidence and encourage writing at home

Importantly, the goal at home is not to reteach lessons, but to:

• encourage your child to talk about their ideas
• show interest in their writing
• support them as they work towards their current goal

Through this shared approach, families become partners in helping each child grow as a writer.
