People are naturally curious. We want to know things and some especially want to know what is going to occur before it happens. This could be particularly handy, especially when it comes to the Lotto numbers! J. But the reality is that we don’t really know what the future holds. Therefore some people may go to extraordinary lengths to see what is in their future. Some may go to clairvoyants who look into balls, use tarot cards, ouija boards or engage in other activities that are not God pleasing. Scripture tells us that we are not to endeavour to determine the future – and for a very good reason.
I remember as a kids growing up the Jetsons were on TV and pictured a futuristic life – flying cars and robots. They even had things like remote controls which in my day of black and white TV seem pretty far-fetched. Now days we have flying cars, robots and even remote controls!
As I told the children in chapel this morning, “We don’t know what the future holds, but we know who holds the future”. That is the reason we do not need to worry about what is going to happen tomorrow. God has promised to care for each of us and as long as we are in His care, then all is right with the world.
We have God’s promise regarding the future. He said, “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 (NLT)
When we have God on our side there is nothing that together with Him we cannot overcome. That is the reason the future holds no fear and we have no need to concern ourselves about it. God is sovereign and He has promised to be with us always – to the end of the age.
