Our Love of Literacy Learning in Prep

Literacy in Prep involves many hands on and practical tasks that consolidate students understanding. The Soundwaves program promotes letter sound knowledge and is the basis for beginning reading and writing. Students engage in a range of activities each week that focus on a letter and sound, art activities, food tasting, fine motor skills and written work.

By the end of Prep students will have participated in a range of tasks that promote reading, writing, spoken language and use of multi modular texts. They will be able to recall characters and main events in stories and provide details of the plot and visual features in the pictures. Students are encouraged to make predictions that allow them connect with the texts. They are able to identify and write letters and sounds of the alphabet and read short predictable texts with support from adults. Students will be developing writing skills and will be able to write simple sentences and recounts with help. They will be able to verbally retell events and experience to an audience through Show and Tell and are encouraged to communicate clearly and purposefully and regularly engage in pair, small group and class discussion.
